Management Core

The Management Core series involves DCFS specific modules as well as six modules provided by CWDS/San Diego State University Foundation.  It provides participants with opportunities to understand leadership from a higher perspective within DCFS.

Courses provide specific skill development opportunities for delegating daily operational tasks to subordinate staff and supports discussions on the significance of larger systems interactions– including court, community-based, statewide, fiscal, and legislative perspectives. Each series is comprised of a closed cohort of participants. The experience level of the participants varies, as does their respective assignments within the Department.  Although courses are offered as stand-alone modules for respective content, the series builds and anchors models, frameworks, issues from earlier modules for comprehensive learning.

Courses are offered individually for one day per month over a 6-8 month period. At the beginning of each module after the first session, participants share their successes and challenges to apply skill they have practiced in the classroom to their workplace. At the completion of each classroom series, a cohort is invited to reconvene in a facilitated Learning Circle for coaching on implementation of topics and problem solving for relevant workplace issues. These Learning Circles are facilitated for one year, and then peer-led after the initial year, and meet quarterly in various DCFS locations throughout the County.
